Alright guys I’m stuck between a 6.5 creedmoor and a 6.5 PRC. I’m going to be rebarreling on a tikka action and i am thinking it will be a semi compact setup at about 22”. I want it to be a capable hunting gun but also take it to a little distance now and then.
What are you guys thoughts and maybe what powders are you using and what velocities are you seeing.
Cartridge, not caliber.
CM leaves you with many more options, concerning everything, but depending on what you’re hunting, 264 might not be enough.
Also distance can mean anything. I think you’re trying to make the criteria fit a decision you’ve already made. Do you want a 6.5cm/prc or do you want something to fit your needs?
I have the 6.5 creed and 6.5 prc and like them both, I think you will have longer barrel life with 6.5 CM, lately been shooting the PRC a lot more, I have a proof barrel with a 7.5 twist so I have been shooting 131 gr hammer hunters and 156 Berger’s and have had good results with both.
A 6.5 PRC might be pretty good for a big game round or long range round, especially with the new 155 gr Berger bullets, 150 gr Sierras, or the 153 Hornady A-Tip. I don't know as to what success anyone is loading lighter projectiles though. I think the 6.5 Creedmoor would probably be more versatile with bullets from about 95 to 147 grains.
The 6.5 CM is a popular caliber. There may be a better selection of cases, dies and other reloading components available.
Hey I know you! I would go with a 6.5 creedmoor imo. Lots of brass out there, cheaper factory ammo incase you're out away from home and need to pick up some ammo real quick. Plus it seems like guys are getting fairly similar velocities with reloads in that barrel length.
