So I’m currently reloading for .308 and the book trim length for the cases is 2.005”. The brass I am using is Alpha Munitions brass and when I got them they were all exactly 2.005”. After 3 firings I see cases that are 1.997” to 2.006”. I have not done any trimming on these cases and all were FL sized with a 0.0015 shoulder bump. Is there an issue with shooting these shorter cases and worrying about the carbon buildup? I’m wondering if the longer cases will see weird pressure signs due to the carbon from the shorter cases... any info? The resizing was using a FL expander ball set up but I have now purchased a Redding Type S bushing die and removed the seating stem... could that help? Or hurt?

First off are you annealing after every resize? If not the spring back is not as consistent and you will see variances. Because the brass is more stiff without annealing. But in my experience, with new brass, usually between the 1st and 2nd reload you will see the neck OD vary slightly because the brass needs to fully fire-form to your chamber. Ive seen brass shrink in OAL after the first resizing and after a couple firings it started to get very consistent . Now with the expander stem it’s possible but when both those steps are done at the same time you will usually see runout suffer .
